Franciszek Mertens Scholarship - 7th edition

We would like to remind you that June 1, 2023 is the deadline for sending applications for the Franciszek Mertens Scholarship. Candidates applying for the scholarship should have received an e-mail confirmation.

In the academic year 2017/2018 and in the following years we would like to enable outstanding pupils and graduates of foreign secondary schools to study at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of the Jagiellonian University and enrol on the following degree courses: Mathematics, Computer Mathematics, Computer Science and Computer Science – IT Analyst. These courses are free of charge and are taught in Polish. For the most talented foreign students we offer the Franciszek (Franz) Mertens Scholarship.

The scholarship provides a monthly grant (living allowance) at a rate of 2000 PLN net awarded for the bachelor degree study period and for the period of MSc study programme immediately following on from the BSc  (in total a 5-year scholarship scheme); the grant is paid for ten months of a given academic year (October - July). Scholarship Franciszek Mertens is intended for outstanding students and graduates of foreign secondary schools intending to study at the WMiI UJ, who are finalists of the national-level (denoting a country other than RP, in which the candidate attends a secondary school) mathematics, or computer science olympiads, or they have participated in one of the following international olympiads: International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), International Astronomy Olympiad (IAO), International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA), International Physics Olympiad (IPhO), International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL), Romanian Master of Mathematics (RMM), Romanian Master of Informatics (RMI), International Zhautykov Olympiad (IZhO) or European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) or European Girls’ Olympiad in Informatics (EGOI).
 

The Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of the Jagiellonian University declares that a successful candidate in the competition :

  1. Shall obtain the maximum score in the process of recruitment for the full time, first-cycle and second-cycle studies, for the course of study selected by themselves and conducted by the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the Jagiellonian University.
  2. Shall be informed about a further recruitment process. The successful candidate’s compliance with all the procedures and conditions set out in the regulations concerning the recruitment for studies at the Jagiellonian University, shall be a condition of admission for studies and receiving the scholarship.
  3. Shall have the opportunity to participate in a course of Polish (the course level and the number of hours shall be determined by the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the Jagiellonian University according to the student’s needs).
  4. Shall have guaranteed accommodation at a student hall of residence, which shall be financed from the fellow‘s own resources.
  5. Shall have an academic supervisor allocated for the first year of their studies, chosen by the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science atf the Jagiellonian University  from among the tutors of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the Jagiellonian University . The academic supervisor can be replaced at any time within the duration of studies, by the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of the Jagiellonian University,  or on application by the fellow, with the consent given by the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the Jagiellonian University.
  6. Shall follow an individual course of studies established by the academic supervisor and approved by the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the Jagiellonian University. If feasible, the fellow shall be involved in scientific research carried out at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the Jagiellonian University.
  7. Shall not pay for education.

The 1st stage of the competition: applications for participation in the competition can be made from May 1 to June 1, 2023 via the form available on the Faculty's website.

Along with the application, the participant sends:
• a cover letter containing in particular a curriculum vitae and a description of the candidate's most important achievements and scientific interests,
• scans of documents confirming obtaining the above-mentioned documents; achievements and documents confirming the fulfillment of the conditions referred to in the Regulations.
The 2nd stage of the competition: at most fifteen participants are qualified for this stage by the Committee appointed by the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics of the Jagiellonian University, consisting of an interview with the Committee checking the candidate's level of knowledge in the field of mathematical sciences. The conversation may take place directly or through means of distance communication recording image and sound.
The competition will be settled by July 1, 2023.
