Franciszek Mertens Scholarship - FAQ

1. Who can participate in the competition?

The competition is addressed to the outstanding graduates and pupils of schools outside the Republic of Poland (RP), including schools remaining under the government of the Republic of Poland, which are outside its territory.
On the one hand, it includes graduates, who had completed secondary school education no more than 5 years before the competition was announced. On the other hand, it is addressed to pupils of schools which issue a certificate, or any other document which entitles them to start higher education.

2. Is it necessary to start higher education studies in the year of receiving the scholarship?

No, it is not. If the winner of the competition does not take up their studies at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science in the year of granting the scholarship, they have to start their studies within the next two years.

3. Which documents are required, apart from those listed in the Regulations? Should translations of documents be attached?

No other documents are required. There is no need to send translations. It is sufficient to send scanned documents and diplomas by electronic means of communication.

4. What is the manner, in which interviews at the second stage shall be held? Will the candidates receive documents that will enable them to obtain a visa?

The second stage does not require physical presence of the candidate – interviews shall be held in the form of a videoconference. The winners of the competition, on request, shall receive all the documents, which the University can issue, and which help to receive a visa. Such requirements shall be consulted with each successful candidate on an individual basis.

5. Does a letter of motivation have to be written in the Polish language? If not, which languages shall be accepted?

A letter of motivation can be written in any language. Nonetheless, writing it in the Polish language is welcome. A letter written in English, or Russian shall be also more convenient to the committee than a letter written in, e.g. the Belarusian language.

6. When and where shall the application form be available?

The application form will be available from 1 May on the website concerning the scholarship, which is a subpage of the Faculty internet website.

7. When and in which language shall the interviews be held? What is the required level of the Polish language?

The interviews shall be held between 15 and 30 June. The committee shall contact the participants of the second stage of the competition in order to stipulate a specified timeline. The interview shall be held in a manner which enables the most convenient way of communication between the committee and the candidate. The committee members possess the knowledge of Polish and English, as well as to a lesser degree, of Russian. Generally, it is sufficient to possess the knowledge of English, or minimum knowledge of Polish.

8. What is the address, to which the documents required at the first stage of the competition, should be sent?

On completion of the application form (available from 1 May), the participant of the competition shall receive necessary information concerning further proceedings.

9. Is it possible for a student following an individual course of studies to take up, of their own volition, other courses, apart from the major courses of selected specialisation? Will it be possible to make changes in the specialisation curriculum?

An individual course of studies means that student, in consultation with their academic supervisor, can choose any courses they wish. Student is obliged, however, to obtain a required number of ECTS credits, which means they cannot complete fewer courses than other students. In practical terms, an individual course of studies gives students great feedom.
